The head of Google’s mobile division has attacked a Chinese rival, accusing it of pirating apps and violating rules designed to discourage incompatible versions of Android.

The intervention by Andy Rubin, Google’s senior vice president of mobile and digital content, follows a bizarre incident last week when Acer, the Taiwanese manufacturer, invited journalists to a news conference to demonstrate a new smartphone for the booming Chinese market, only to tell them the event been blocked by Google.

The handset was due to be the first to run Aliyun, a mobile operating system developed by Alibaba, the Chinese e-commerce giant.

It emerged that Acer pulled out when Google threatened to revoke its membership of the Open Handset Alliance, the group of Android manufacturers that guides development of the world’s most popular mobile operating system.

Although Android is free and open source, allowing anyone to copy and adapt it, a condition of membership of the OHA is that handsets based on elements of the software must be cross-compatible and able to run the same apps. If Acer was kicked out, its future products could not carry the Android logo and would not have access to the Google Play app store.

“While Android remains free for anyone to use as they would like, only Android compatible devices benefit from the full Android ecosystem,” Google said.

Well some sources are saying that the aliyun OS is illegal and that they are Also pirated 3rd party apps in aliyun’s app store. Alibaba must be one very unhappy camper.

That would be very bad for the consumers, also all the apps would not benefit.

It is a very bad news for Chinese smart phone makers and google has attacked them due to their silly mistakes. I do not think that google will cancel the licenses of Chinese mobile phone makers for these small problems. As we all know that google never compromises on quality so it might suspend licences of chinese mobile phone maker for using Android for some time.

It sucks because while the Android platform is “open source” and any company can technically create hardware for it, Google still owns the market. Google is the monopolized powerhouse that controls the software (that the people want anyways), and without the Android logo there is little hope for mainstream success.

It doesn’t really sound good that Aliyun supposedly has pirated apps. I’ve read on Engadget though that even though Google wouldn’t be working with Aliyun, they have extended an offer of support to the latter if only they would make the move to be fully compatible with Android.

I think that Google should change the fact that Android is free and open source, I mean allowing anyone to copy and adapt it is really a bad decision.
that’s just a stupid mistake but they can fix it, but Google never asked about quality.
Acer pulled out when Google threatened to revoke its membership of the Open Handset Alliance, they should do that way earlier, that’s bad news for the customers.

Google is just money hungry and needs to have a hold over the Android market. Android was made from Linux and the last time I checked Linux was a free open source project. These Chinese companies should hire programmers to create their own OS from linux and leave google and Android alone.
