According to recent reports, Samsung has announced that they plan to begin the mass production of 10 nanometer chips by 2016. The new 10nm chips will be stronger than the current 14nm chips but will be smaller and use less power.
Currently and as previously mentioned, Samsung uses 14nm FinFET chips, which only started mass production earlier this year, for its own Exynos 7420 processor found in the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The Exynos 7420 is considered to be the fastest Android smartphone processor in the market today and with the development of more advanced 10 nanometer FinFET chips, the performance of Samsung’s next-generation processors will be much better.
At the recent International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), Samsung demonstrated their 10nm FinFET chips by showing off the manufacturing process of 300mm FinFET wafers. Once the new chips are used for processors, we’ll begin seeing them in smartphones, wearable devices, network equipment, datacenter hardware, and many more.
This new development shows how far in front Samsung is compared to its peers. Apple and TSMC have only begin looking into 10nm FinFET process technology and their upcoming 16nm chips for the next-generation iPhones will only begin mass production next month.
