Qualcomm Releases Details on the Snapdragon 820 Processor

Qualcomm has released a few details on its upcoming next-generation Snapdragon 820 processor, the chip that hopefully turns things around for Qualcomm after the disaster that was the Snapdragon 810 which was plagued with overheating issues with no real fix made available.

According to Qualcomm, the Adreno 530 will present a 40% increase in performance over its predecessor, the Adreno 510. The boost in performance will also be coupled with a 40% reduction in power usage. Qualcomm is able to achieve the drop in power usage in spite of the increase in performance via a new power gating system that lets the GPU more quickly switch to idle mode to save energy. The Adreno 530 will support several APIs including OpenGL ES 3.1, the Android Extension Pack, and on some platforms OpenGL ES 3.2. It’s also backwards compatible with older APIs including OpenGL 2.0 and Renderscript for GPGPU. Lastly, the Adreno 530 will support 4K output at 60 frames per second via HDMI 2.0 and wireless 4K streaming at 30 fps.

Spectra will feature enhanced dynamics and de-mosaicing, an improved hybrid auto-focus framework, better radial noise reduction and color artifact correction, more natural skin tones, and more. The new image signal processor will support multi-camera systems up to three sensors that work simultaneously, a max camera resolution of 25-megapixels, and video recording at 30fps at max resolution. Lastly, the new image signal processor will be more power efficient and feature a higher throughput.

It’s been previously reported that the Snapdragon 820 will be built on TSMC’s new 16nm FinFET process and is expected to show up on devices either near the end of 2015 or early 2016.
