Meizu MX5 vs Huawei Honor 7: Affordable Flagship Comparison

The Meizu MX5 and the Huawei Honor 7 have just been officially launched by their respective companies today so we’ve taken the specifications and features of both devices and compared them with each other to see which new smartphone comes out on top.

Both the Meizu MX5 and Huawei Honor 7 feature full-metal unibody designs. While the MX5 features a more rounded design similar to its predecessor with features reminiscent of the iPhone 6, the Honor 7 comes with a boxier design with a metal band that goes around the whole device rather than just the sides and top like the Honor 6.

Due to its smaller screen, the Honor 7 is smaller measuring 143.2 x 71.9 x 8.5mm while the MX5 measures 149.9mm x 74.7mm x 7.6mm. On other hand, in spite of its larger size, the MX5 is actually lighter than the Honor 7 weighing only 149 grams compared to the 157 grams of the Honor 7. Both devices will come in silver, gold, and grey colors.

Both devices also feature a fingerprint sensor. The Honor 7 has a rear mounted fingerprint sensor similar to the Mate 7 while the MX5 comes with the home button fingerprint sensor which the company calls the mTouch reader. While the both sensors function similarly, a front-mounted fingerprint sensor has proven to be more convenient and versatile as it allows the usage of any of one’s fingers and does not require the device to be picked up when used.

As previously mentioned, the Huawei Honor 7 features a smaller screen measuring only 5.2-inches while the MX5 comes with a larger 5.5-inch screen. Since both displays feature a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, the Honor 7’s screen comes out with a higher pixel density of 424ppi compared to the 401ppi of the MX5. But while the MX5’s display pixel density is lower, it will render colors way better than the display found on the Honor 7 due to the MX5’s AMOLED panel compared to the more conventional IPS panel found on the Honor 7.

Both the MX5 and Honor 7 feature 20-megapixel cameras with 6-element lenses but the Honor 7 features a brighter lens with an aperture of f/2.0 while the MX5 comes with an f/2.2 lens. Additionally, the Honor 7’s lens is protected by sapphire glass while the MX5’s lens is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3. On the other hand, the MX5 is coupled with a faster laser auto-focus compared to the older phase detection auto-focus technology coupled with the Honor 7’s camera. As for their front-facing cameras, the Honor 7 comes with a more powerful 8-megapixel front-facing camera while the MX5’s front shooter features only a 5-megapixel sensor.

Processor and RAM

While the Meizu MX5 features MediaTek’s MT6795T SoC, also known as the Helio X10, the Huawei Honor 7 comes with the company’s own Kirin 935 chipset. The Helio X10 is a true octa-core chip featuring eight Cortex-A53 cores all running at 2.2GHz while the Kirin 935 comes with four Cortex-A53 cores running at 2.2GHz and another four at 1.5GHz.

Based on this, the MX5’s processor is expected to perform better than the Honor 7’s. Although, the Honor 7 has the advantage of a better GPU with the Mali-T628 which runs at 600MHz compared to the PowerVR G6200 found on the MX5 which only runs at 450Mhz. As for memory, both devices come with 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM.

huawei-honor7Battery and Storage

The batteries on the Honor 7 and MX5 are very similar with the former featuring a 3100mAh battery and the latter coming equipped with a slightly larger 3150mAh battery. Both devices also come with support for their respective fast charging technologies.

As for storage, the Meizu MX5 comes in three storage variants – 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB – while the Huawei Honor 7 comes in only two storage variants – 16GB and 64GB.

As previously mentioned, the Meizu MX5 will be available in three variants priced at 1,800 Yuan, 1,999 Yuan, and 2,399 Yuan for the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, respectively. On the other hand, the Honor 7 is available in three variants in spite of only having two storage variants. The first variant of the Honor 7 with single SIM support and 16GB of storage will be available for 1,999 Yuan, the second variant which introduces dual SIM support with the same internal storage will be priced at 2,199 Yuan, and the third variant with 64GB of storage and dual SIM support will be available for 2,499 Yuan.

Overall, the Huawei Honor 7 is slightly more expensive than the Meizu MX5. Additionally, the MX5’s lowest variant already comes with dual-SIM support while the Honor 7’s lower variant can only handle a single SIM card.
