MediaTek Showcases MT8163 and MT8736 64-bit Processors for Tablets

MediaTek has really taken a big chunk of the mobile processor markets in recent years with the company’s products showing up in the devices of high-end smartphone and tablet brands like Lenovo, Xiaomi, and HTC. Recently, the company showcased the specifications and features of its latest duo of tablet processors – the MediaTek MT8163 and MT8735 both of which feature four cores and 64-bit architecture.

The first of the two new tablet processors, the MT8163, is a cost-effective processor solution for WiFi-only tablets. It features an A53 CPU that can support devices with screen resolutions of up to 1080p 60GHz, operating systems up to Android 5.1 Lollipop, H.265 video playback, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS.

On the other hand, the second processor, the MT8735, supports FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, WCDMA, CMDA2000, full-mode 4G tablet TDS, and GSM networks. The MT8735 also features the same A53 CPU as the MT8163 but might have a higher frequency as well as support for dual-band WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0.

MediaTek is positioning these new tablet processors as mid to low-range tablet solutions with very affordable price tags. There are reports that the MT8163 will be available to manufacturers for as low as $5. It looks like MediaTek is looking to become the next standard in mid to low-end tablets in spite of Intel’s dominance in the category.
