Huawei’s Kirin 960 May Not Be A Big Upgrade Compared To Its Previous Generation

Kirin 955 is considered Huawei’s custom top SoC, and it is that (overclocked Kirin 950 = Kirin 955) that powers this year’s flagship line for Huawei. But how does it stand against the other competitors like SD820, Exynos 8890 and Mediatek Helio X20? Well, against the first two, the Kirin 955 doesn’t stand a chance while it is a little faster than Helio X20. But, undeniably, it Kirin series has entered the game and it is here to stay. But soon, Kirin 960 is approaching to production.

So, is Kirin’s 955 adequate for a flagship? Will the next-gen Kirin 960 cover the gap or ever surpass the competition? From the way things are right now, it is difficult.

Analyst Pan Jiutang, posted on Weibo that although there are a number of changes improving the performance, those are not enough. He also has specs of the new SoC but he wouldn’t disclose them.

He mentioned that the biggest changes are going to be on the network side, probably a modem integrated with the SoC, like Qualcomm has done with the Snapdragon Series and not so much with performance.
