Atongm S1 Miracast DLNA Airplay WiFi Display Receiver Dongle comes in a good looking, well protected box. Following are the contents of the box:
1 x WiFi Display Receiver Dongle
1 x Micro USB cable
1 x HDMI Extension Cable
1 x User Manual (English and Chinese)
Dongle has HDMI connector on one side and micro USB on the other for power to run. You can directly connect HDMI connector to the corresponding socket on the back of your TV or display or you can use the HDMI extension cable to choose the location of the dongle for some reason, such as hiding the visible USB cable from the side of the TV. So hardware connection is very simple, even a non techie can connect it without using the manual.
After connections are made, press the mode button once to go into Miracast mode.
Windows (8.1) setup is the simplest. Go to Devices and Printers window then Click Add Device. Then follow instructions. Of course your PC needs to have WIFI connectivity.
Anrdoid setup is still easy but requires a little bit more work than Windows. In Wi-Fi settings, you need to select Wi-Fi Direct and find the dongle in the list. Also, you need to enable Wi-Fi Display in display settings. If your android device or version does not support Wi-Fi Display, you will not have that option in display settings. In that case, you can search for a newer ROM if it helps, if not, you have no luck. You need to have a Wi-Fi display (Miracast) capable device.
I don't have an iPhone or iPad to test. But, short user manual contains instructions for it.
In this mode, Atongm can connect to your Wi-Fi router. User manual says, it gets the updates from internet if connected to. To, connect it to your router, browse and find the ATONGM-xxxxx in available SSIDs. Then select it and click connect. When prompted for a password, enter the default password "12345678". You will see the IP address of Atongm on TV screen. In your browser, type "http://atongmIPaddress" and you will see the following screen:
From this screen enter into first menu item to connect Atongm to your Wi-Fi router. Then it will get an IP address from your router inside your subnet. That IP address will also be visible on your TV screen.
When the above steps are completed, Atongm will advertise itself as DLNA player client on your network. I have used iMediaShare on Huawei Honor 6 and sent different video files to the TV thru Atongm. You will read the results in the results below.
In this mode, Atongm S1 is able to flawlessly display static 1080p full HD screen. You can give presentations, show your pictures or display whatever is on your screen on the TV. However, if you want to watch videos, I can suggest using DLNA mode. Because, in miracast mode, video display has some problems, such as stutter, lag (up to 30 seconds) and jumps due to lag. The problems are present even with the non HD videos.
This mode is ideal for watching videos. I haven't seen any problems with watching HD (720p) divx/xvid films. Picture quality is excellent. No mosaics, stutters etc.
If you select correct mode for your purpose, this cheap tiny gadget will serve you very well. The cost is about 1/2 to 1/3 of other famous brand dongles. However, functionality is nearly the same with them. Please bear in mind that Miracast is relatively new technology, supported since Android 4.2 and has not been mature yet. So, even most expensive dongles are not perfect yet.
User manual is in English and Chinese only. It is also very short. However, it should be easy for you to set it up using the explanations in this post together with the manual.
